Self Love, be intentional by Caitlyn Roux

In Caitlyn Roux’s Ted Talk, Self-Love, be Intentional, she tells her story of self love and the benefits of loving yourself. Throughout her video, she uses a variety of multimedia learning principles, the dual coding theory and the cognitive load theory. Firstly, the multimedia learning principle that was the most evident was the redundancy principle. The redundancy principle is the idea that people learn better when the same information is not presented in more than one format. This is applicable to this Ted Talk because the only source of information is the speaker. This is beneficial to the listeners because there is no sensory overload. With regards to the dual coding theory, which postulates that both visual and verbal information are used to represent information, it is not evident in the presentation. However, the benefits of the presentation being posted on youtube, is the option for subtitles. If a viewer feels that having subtitles on the screen will enhance their understanding of the content being presented, they can enable the feature. Lastly, the cognitive load theory, which is the idea that if there is an overload in the working memory before there is time for encoding then the information will be forgotten. The cognitive load theory is applied in this video because there is only one source (two if one chooses to enable subtitles) sharing information with the viewers. The speaker’s tone of voice is also beneficial to the listeners because it is captivating and intriguing.
